Electrical Forensics & Expert Witness

What went wrong and why?

We Specialise in Electrical Incident and Accident Investigation, including Forensic Investigation and Expert Witness cases.

Following electrical fault or failure, or if evidence suggests a fire had an electrical cause, we can help establish what went wrong and why.

Providing detailed on-site examinations  and / or laboratory testing services, examining any equipment that may be relevant to the case.   We can also work from photographs and diagrams or can help by considering available reports, photographs and witness statements if remedial works have been carried out.   We are able to carry out incident reconstruction in our lab if needed.

Our clients include solicitors, insurance companies, and distribution network operators.  Our work has assisted the HSE, Police and Fire Service.

If cases progress  we can serve as Expert Witness, our reports are compliant with Civil Procedure Rules (CPR35), or, in criminal cases, part 19, and are unbiased & intended to assist the court.

Previous work has included (but not limited to): cable joint failures, overheating connections, failure of protective devices, manufacturing defects, lithium batteries, inverters, control and communications failures, harmonic filter issues, variable speed drives, component failures, actuators, arc flash, surges, and flash-overs.

Additional Services:

Testing & Measurements

We use sophisticated modelling software and measuring equipment enabling us to calculate or measure voltages  on metalwork (or across the ground).  We are skilled and experienced in exploring 'earthing systems' and protection operation.  Our on-site testing services can assist with design validation and policy work.  Our testing and measurements services include:

  • Earthing design, testing, and training at all voltage levels
  • Power Quality surveys & solutions (Harmonics, Power Factor, Flicker, Voltage dips / sags)
  • Ducter (micro-ohm meter) testing of connections and equipment
  • ENA EREC G5 / 5 surveys
  • Stray current monitoring
  • Transformer condition assessment
  • Protection investigation & testing (routine or following mal-operation)
  • Electric Field, Magnetic Field, & Radio Frequency interference investigations
  • Fault Reconstruction

Low Carbon Technology & Innovation

We are  support innovation projects, and those which assist with decarbonisation & renewable energy projects.

We have experience and expertise in solving electric vehicle charging issues (demand management, earthing and power quality) , as well as working with solar, windfarms and biogas.

We work with other like-minded businesses and academia to share expertise in bids for innovative new projects and research & development opportunities.

We can help with:

  • Assistance with, & facilitation of decarbonisation / renewable energy projects (including EMC, harmonics, earthing, and similar issues)
  • Training
  • Research & development
  • Innovation work
  • Solving electric vehicle charging issues
  • Collaborations

Policy Work & Standards

We offer experienced expert services in Policy & Standards, including:

  • Policy support services
  • Strategy support services
  • Technical Authoring (eg, Electrical Standards)
  • Asset Management & Inspection
  • Maintenance Advice & Consultancy
  • On-site Testing & Assisting with Design Validation
  • General advice

Training Provision & Guest Speaker

We can provide training in:

  • Electrical Distribution and Safety
  • Earthing
  • Harmonics / EMC (Electro-magnetic Compatibility)
  • Electrical Aspects of Fire Investigation
  • Bespoke courses

Our prinicple consutant, Rob Weller, can also be booked as a speaker at events / conferences / seminars / webinars etc.

Rob's appearance as a specialist expert with on-line media channel, eFIXX can be found on our articles page.

Supply Useage Queries (e.g. high bills)

Due to high volumes of enquiries, we are no longer taking on cases of supply usage issues with private domestic premises / individual small business premises.

For larger customers, we are able to install logging equipment to confirm that the amouts being billed are correct, or otherwise, and we can carry out a survey to identify where the energy is going.  For example, large customers can save thousands of pounds in energy bills each month by  (e.g.) adjusting pump control / regulation schemes rather than allowing the equipment to run continuously.

A full survey is not usually justified for domestic customers.  However, as we are contacted regularly about concerns on supply usage / landlord charges / neighbours use etc., there are some simple checks that can be carried out by the homeowner / occupier.  Please see our article on this here
